300 WSM (Winchester Short Magnum)
VS.![]()
Winchester entered the market of non-belted magnums with the 300 WSM. Then Remington came to market with the 300 Rem. SA Ultra Mag. We have used factory published data for each cartridge in this comparison. Most recently the 300 RCM from Ruger and Hornady hit the market, this cartridge employs Hornady's special proprietary powders that produce higher velocities in a shorter barrel, loads listed for the RCM are for a 20" barrel, since that is the selling point Ruger is working from. Frankly the 300 RCM looks better with a 24" barrel, however the velocities reported by Hornady will be near impossible for the handloader to reproduce.
Z-Hat Custom Chambers rifles for all of these calibers, so we thought the comparison of the original 300 Winchester, and the new 300 WSM was interesting, but even more interesting is to add our 300 Hawk, and subsequent factory offerings to the mix. Simple is always the best, judge for your self.

We have used published factory data in this chart.
In the case if the Remington SA Ultra Mag. we used data from an industry
magazine product announcement article. Any variations
that seem out of place are a result of the choice of components. The data
for the 300
Hawk was established using manufacturers published ballistic coefficients
and actual chronographed loads. This Chart is for comparison only.
Probably the most important set of numbers here is the trajectory information. There is no more than 7/10 inch difference between these cartridges at 300 yards, a significant bit of information when choosing a cartridge.
The 300 Hawk provides non-belted magnum performance with less powder, and therefore less recoil. Based on the venerable 30-06 case the brass will always be available and reasonable in cost for the Hawk cartridge. We offer fully formed & headstamped brass for the 300 Hawk too.
If you decide one of these cartridges has an advantage over the others we will be glad to help you assemble the Hunting rifle of your dreams around it. We are not bashful, we will chamber your rifle for the cartridge of your choice.
