During the normal course of business we have gotten to know some gunsmiths with superb skills, artists crafting metal and wood into fine and functional firearms.  Usually their ballistic knowledge is well rounded, but we believe one such gunsmith from Wyoming is quickly becoming a modern day P.O. Ackley.   He is Fred Zeglin and he has done extensive development of a line of wildcat cartridges gaining popularity for their ballistic properties and low felt recoil.   Has a good website too!

Andy Hill, Hawk Bullets

The gun is a real shooter.  Consistently, shoots 3 brands of factory standard ammo under an inch.  Shoots Federal National Match under 1/2 moa for a 3 shot group.  Shoots two other brands of match ammo under 2/3 of an inch.  Thanks.

I have been incredibly pleased with the results I have achieved from your product.  The concentricity of the rounds I have been producing has been excellent with appreciable results accruing to my shooting.  I thank you for making such a great product and shall definitely keep your services in mind for any future projects I might come up with.  Thanks again.

I just wanted to drop you a line to tell you that I took the 458 Lott out last Thursday and shot it.  My son and I shot a box of Hornady 500 grain soft points.  That is one great job you did for me.  I am completely satisfied with the project.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how it went and thank you once again for a very well done job.  I'm looking forward to having you do another project for me in the future.

I took a small doe this year with the .300 Hawk at about 150 yards and it was devastating to see her shot reaction, completely knocked her off her feet and never moved there after.

I WANTED TO DROP YOU A LINE AND LET YOU KNOW HOW GOOD THE REMINGTON ACTION YOU REBARRELED FOR ME IS DOING.  MY RELOADS CONSIST OF 210 BERGER VLD'S AND H-1000,WITH FEDERAL 215 PRIMERS.  I HAVE NOT USED ANY BENCHREST PREPARATIONS ON THE BRASS.  THIS MORNING I SHOT IT IN 82' F AND 5-15 MPH WINDS. AT 1056 YARDS I GOT A 3 SHOT GROUP OF 3.825" AND A FOUR SHOT GROUP A LITTLE OVER 4.9"..   I WONDER HOW MUCH BETTER A SET OF YOUR DIES WOULD MAKE IT....  ONCE AGAIN, THANKS AND GOD BLESS

Z-Hat builds accurate rifles. That's the results of a little development work for my 340 Wby. with RL-22 and 210 gr Nosler Partitions.   Three shots in 0.24 inches at 100 yds (I can honestly assert that the fourth shot on the far right is a "flyer" caused by my excitement).

Thanks again for a fabulous rifle!

Hal. L.....

No complaints from me!  It's everything I wanted.  If I miss a hog at 300 yards, it's because of me, not the rifle.  I shot this group in my backyard from a wobbly old picnic table. That's about as good as I'm capable of shooting.  With an experienced rifleman behind the trigger, I'm sure the rifle would be putting 5 shots into the "4's" Thanks for the great work.

Alaskan Bear, taken with 375 HawkThis letter is to say thanks for the nice job in re-barreling my current production 1895 Winchester to .375 Hawk.  The rifle looks great, and shoots as well as I can possibly hold it.

Accuracy has been excellent, as I have shot several inch-size 4-shot groups.

I wanted a rifle that would be quick on follow up shots, but strong enough to discourage a bear at close range or knock down an animal to allow time for a follow up shots.   The 1895 is doing exactly that.  The second bear on my Alaskan trip probably would have expired after the first shot, but got up very quickly and started to run.  The Winchester seemed to rack its own lever, the sights settled right back in on the rebound from the first shot, and I rolled him up.                            Steve D.

Just had to tell you about some impressive things my 3200 Hawk is doing for me.  I went out and shot off a bench at a deer target that was a measured 600 yards away.  Using my most accurate load with a 220 Hornady I was able to shoot a 4 inch three shot group. I can't believe the jaw dropping accuracy I"m getting with my hunting rifle.  If you can't tell I'm very excited, do you get these results with all the rifles you build...wow.

Jim H.

I received the die and it works beautifully.  You do exceptional work---thanks!

David C.

I finally got a break in the weather & some time to shoot the .458 Lott.  The rifle feeds & functions flawlessly & I am sure accuracy is better than I can probably hold. Thanks for the nice work, I am very pleased.

The 338 Hawk is all that I thought it would be and then some.  I'm a happy camper.   Thanks.

(Below excerpted from a letter Bob Fulton shared with us.)

I am glad to pass on my comments on the seating dies and reloading dies made by Fred Zeglin of Z-Hat Custom Dies, in Casper, Wy.

To qualify my comments, I am a mechanical engineer, machinist, I developed the "Hawk" line of precision hunting bullets which are very successful. I have placed a few times in the National Matches, and have hunted, and handloaded for over 40 years. My bullets and bullet designs have been written up in many shooting magazines around the world. I am no longer active in any production venture, but do work as a consultant in this field.

Regarding Fred's dies Yes, I believe they are more accurate and better made than any other brand that I have seen. Part of this is because each is hand made by Fred. In addition he has a few features that are not seen in other seating dies. The locate the ctg. on the datum line or center of shoulder, all others locate on the neck. As you know, the neck of cartridges is very often bent, crooked, or dented.

Another reason Fred's dies are better, is that he spends a little more money and installs a very precision spindle actually made for a micrometer, probably about 50% more accurate than the sloppy ones I have seen in other makes. There is NO slop in his spindle.

In summary, I have never seen or used any dies as precise and of the quality as the dies that Z-Hat Custom makes. They cost a little more, but are worth it. Yes, I do know Fred, but have no connection or interest in his business in any way other than initiating the Hawk line of cartridge designs.

Sincerely,

Bob Fulton

When I picked the rifle out of the case, my face must have looked like a little kid on Christmas morning.  Fred, it's beautiful, it's an heirloom.  The action finish is much nicer than I expected.  The white bolt looks great with the black stock, it cycles sooo smooth and its so light.

A guy on the range today had a 264 MAG. I was running around 3000fps with 140"s from my 264 Hawk.  I cronographed his hand loads at 2750 with 140"s. Last, I chronographed his factory loads,140 gr at 2954.

You have done what you said you could do. Mag velocities without mag head size  and case capacity.                            Troy C.

This letter is to express my great satisfaction and pleasure with the custom Siamese Mauser that you built for me, chambered in 45-70.  In a reasonable period of time, you turned my surplus Siamese Type 45 action into a beautiful sporting rifle.  Please be assured that I will turn to you again for my next rifle project.

Sincere Regards, Jeff B.

Before Cryo Treatment.Cryo treatment improves accuracy in most rifles.

Enclosed are three sets of targets from the gun you built for me. The first page of each set was shot before the barrel was cryo treated. The second page of each set were shot after cryo treatment. I tried to duplicate all the conditions, including the same loads. The same friend was with me both trips to the range, on the second trip he accused me of missing the target completely. I thought that you would like to see the targets first hand and admire your handy work.

Believe me I could not have accomplished this without you. Thanks so much again........What a shooter!!!!!!!!!!!!\Carroll C.

Fred,

I fired my .375 Hawk for the first time today. I guess you did a good job. The fire forming loads , while doing barrel break in ( so every shot is a fouling shot) , were giving me M.O.A. groups and smaller. Makes me wonder what it will do with a good load and a dry barrel.

Job well done, thanks a bunch.

More Comments.

Fred,

I received the die set yesterday. I must say that I am impressed. I took the worst cases I could find and ran them through the FL sizer. I could measure no more than .001" run out and this was not an add to the existing case as it was that far out prior to sizing. I ran the same case through the file die, again nothing added. I setup and used your new MIS seating die, with pulled bullets and cases that were out, the die added just .001". This is the way dies are suppose to work.

I want to Thank You again for the excellent work and wanted you to know you have a satisfied customer!!!

As a note to compare the 'brand X' dies in 358 STA, the average neck runout after sizing is +/- .010"

Art B.

Thank you for the decapping pins and ball sizers. Those MIS micheads are the most repeatable seater I have ever used, very precise.

L. Hurst

You made the 25/300 Winchester dies for me last year and they are fantastic!! I'm pushing 95 grain Bergers at 4050fps.

Joe G.

I still think my Browning 95 in .411 Hawk is about the best thing going.  Thanks again for making it for me.

Bill R.

Thanks again for building my very interesting rifle in 416 Remington. It shoots great!!!  I have clover leafed several three shot groups with 350 grain Speers.  Not a maximum load, but it is accurate.

Gordon D.

I have one of your wonderful takedown conversions
(love this thing!).
