My Professional Information

Nobody wants to send their prized possession to a stranger.
So, lets get acquainted a bit.

Fred Zeglin, Owner of Z-Hat Custom, I attended Lassen College where I earned a degree in Gunsmithing. I am a certified professional and have made a living gunsmithing for 23 + years.  I teach an NRA Gunsmithing course for wildcat design at Murray State College and possibly at other locations.   I have worked in Idaho, California, and Wyoming. I have deep roots here in Wyoming. I grew up here and much of my family is in the state as well.

My approach to the business of barreling Rifles  is a little different than most; I guarantee all my work, and I aim to finish your project in a reasonable amount of time. In a time when many gunsmiths have delivery times of as much as two years, I offer six month (sometimes less) turn around on simple jobs. Delivery time seldom exceeds ten months on custom rifles, the biggest holdup is in gathering the materials to build top quality firearms. The reason we can deliver your job more quickly than others?  We don't sell guns, We concentrate on Custom rifles and barrel work alone.

As a result of the wildcats we have developed I wrote a book, "Wildcat Cartridges, Reloader's Handbook of Wildcat Cartridge Design."  It was published in 2005 by LR Books and is available in our shopping cart on this site.  Fred is the first gunsmith to tackle the subject of wildcatting in a book since P.O. Ackley in the 1960s.  The book includes historical reference as well as information about tooling, how-to, dimensioned drawings and even some load data.  I am current writing a biography of P.O. Ackley, Well known wildcatter and gunsmith.

If you are uncertain about sending your guns to a gunsmith, the best advice we can give is to just pick out a job that you feel will test our skills to your satisfaction and give us a try. Once you know that we offer top quality services your fears will melt away. We look forward to helping you soon.  Z-Hat Custom can supply references upon request.  For more details look at the "Meet the Gunsmith" Article from the May 2004 issue of Guns Magazine.

Here is a quote from Andy Hill at Hawk Bullets, "During the normal course of business we have gotten to know some gunsmiths with superb skills, artists crafting metal and wood into fine and functional firearms.  Usually their ballistic knowledge is well rounded, but we believe one such gunsmith from Wyoming is quickly becoming a modern day P.O. Ackley.   He is Fred Zeglin and he has done extensive development of a line of wildcat cartridges gaining popularity for their ballistic properties and low felt recoil."
